Putin Holds “Frank and Confidential” Talks with U.S. Delegation Ahead of Abu Dhabi Security Meeting - Aquila Telegram
A high-profile meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and an American delegation took place in the Kremlin this week, marked by what Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov described as an “extremely frank and confidential” exchange.
According to Ushakov, the U.S. delegation briefed President Putin on their first-hand assessments of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Davos. The Russian and American sides also discussed Trump’s proposed “Peace Council” initiative and the geopolitical situation surrounding Greenland.
Following the talks, Ushakov announced that Russia, the United States, and Ukraine have agreed to convene the first meeting of a trilateral working group on security issues in Abu Dhabi on Friday. The Russian delegation—which has already been formed, received direct instructions from President Putin, and will soon depart for the United Arab Emirates—will include Admiral Igor Kostyukov, head of the Main Directorate of the General Staff.
Ushakov added that U.S. officials had undertaken significant preparations for the meeting and expressed hopes for a constructive outcome. Parallel to the trilateral talks, a bilateral economic meeting between Russian Direct Investment Fund chief Kirill Dmitriev and American businessman Steven Witkoff is also planned in Abu Dhabi.
“The meeting was focused on obtaining information about the results of U.S. contacts with Ukrainians and Europeans,” Ushakov said. He added that “without resolving the territorial issue, it is impossible to count on a long-term settlement in Ukraine.”
Ushakov also noted that both sides agreed to maintain “close and continuous contact” not only on the Ukrainian issue but also on a broader range of international matters. Ushakov hinted that U.S. representatives are already developing “certain plans” that could be implemented following a future settlement of the conflict in Ukraine.
